Explore the woods and wilds of KC – one trail at a time.
Hit the trails in Greater Kansas City
We don’t have the Rocky Mountains or Pacific Coast. But why copy them? Missouri and Kansas have unique geography, climate, flora and fauna all our own. And we’re not sharing. Kansas City hikers don’t have to be content with nature trails through fields of cow patties.
They can experience:
Bluffs rising 250 feet above the Missouri River.
Cascading waterfalls.
Wildlife including bald eagles, bobcats and flying squirrels.
Trails ranging from a quarter-mile to hundreds of miles in length.
Urban hikes through the heart of the city as well as secluded trails miles from anyone.
If that’s news to you, then you’ve come to the right place.

Kansas City’s hiking scene
What’s here beyond the cow pies?
Why, we’re glad you asked. We can start with:
Miles of “Mighty Mo”
We’re home to miles of Missouri River frontage and its confluence with the Kaw (Kansas) River. This includes scenic bluffs, bottomland forest and even big city walks beside the river.
Trails that rock
The limestone bedrock beneath us has eroded to form cliffs, boulders, canyons, caves and waterfalls throughout the Kansas City area.
Four of a (different) kind
Our four full seasons allow us to experience 360 degrees of nature, including migratory birds, rushing rivers and the fireworks of wildflowers.
Powerhouse prairie
Sure, there’s plenty of prairie here, but it’s not the bland plains imagined by outsiders. It’s full of wildlife, rolling hills, clear streams and epic sunsets.
Wild woods
We’re blanketed with thousands of acres of forest, ranging from bottomland (riparian) forest to upland woods. Trails carve through miles of it, while other public land is ripe for bushwacking.
Need we say more? Lace up your boots and let’s go exploring.

The Kansas Flint Hills are a well-kept secret. There are no traffic jams and no tourist season. Yet their stark and remote beauty is unsurpassed. In addition to their scenic charms, they are also one of the largest unspoiled areas of North America.
Beyond the landscape, the Flint Hills are dotted with picturesque courthouses, ghost towns, bison and abandoned one-room schools.
