“Fall” in love with these three KC-area hikes

As the leaves turn, make plans to explore these local expressions of autumn.

Where can you experience fall colors in Greater Kansas City? Well, everywhere, right? Of course. But if you want to be literally enveloped in autumn surroundings, there are some destinations worthy of exploration. We’ve listed some of our favorites here. What are yours?

Parkville Nature Sanctuary, Parkville, MO

Parkville Nature Sanctuary and White Alloe Creek Conservation Area

Well-marked dirt trails lead past streams, waterfalls, limestone outcroppings and wooded bluffs. After your hike, grab coffee, lunch or candy in Downtown Parkville.

Hidden Valley Park, Kansas City, MO

Hidden Valley Park

Walk under a thick forest canopy along the ridges of a steep ravine in Kansas City North.

Mill Creek Streamway, Johnson County, MO

Mill Creek Streamway: Nelson Island

This 17-mile long trail traverses Johnson County from Olathe in the south to the Kansas River in the north. All of the trail is worth walking, but Nelson Island – right on the river – is a special place.

Runners Up

It’s nearly impossible to recommend just three trails for autumn adventures. Here are a few more we enjoy in the fall:

Weston Bluffs Trail, Weston, Mo.

Wyandotte County Lake

Kill Creek Park, Johnson County, Kan.

Flint Hills Trail, Pressonville Road trailhead near Osawatomie, Kan.
