Hiking Kansas book dispels “flyover” myth

This new Falcon Guide highlights natural wonders from western Kansas mesas to Johnson County parks.

In this interview, Kansas City Hiker speaks with Seth Brooks, author of the recently released Falcon Guide "Hiking Kansas." Seth talks about his transformative years living in Spain, where he fell in love with the great outdoors while hiking the Camino de Santiago, and his return to the United States. Settling in the Loess Hills of western Iowa, Seth's exploration of local trails sparked the idea for his first hiking guidebook.

Seth discusses the unique ecosystems and hidden gems that Kansas offers, challenging its common perception as merely flyover country. We asked Seth to highlights three must-visit regions of the state. It’s no surprise that he recommends:

  • The rugged Elk City Lake area.

  • The sandstone spires of Wilson Lake State Park.

  • The remote, wild landscapes of Western Kansas.

Seth also shares his favorite Kansas Hike in the Greater Kansas City area:

  • Olathe’s Prairie Center Natural Area

  • Shawnee Mission Park

  • Baker Wetlands (near Lawrence)

Seth’s interview, and his guidebook, dispel the myth of a boring, homogenous Kansas. Ready to start exploring?
