Kansas’ Chase Lake Falls stun with 40-foot drop
This striking waterfall is only part of the beauty found in Chase State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area.
Chase Lake Falls is unexpected. In the middle of the rolling Flint Hills, near Cottonwood Falls, water tumbles about 40 feet downward over a series of rocky shelves. It’s immediate source of water is Chase Lake, which is fed by Prather Creek. The falls are driven by lake overflow, which ebbs and flows with seasons. If you want to see a dynamic flow, then visit in a wet season. The falls run lean in dry months.
A trail about one-mile in length takes you from the dam, across the lake and to the falls. Another trail provides access to the hills above the lake, which provide stunning views of the area.
This nature area is not a one-trick pony. Chase Lake is a bright blue gem in the midst of green rolling Flint Hills. The 383-acre refuge is open for camping in designated areas. The lake is also a popular fishing destination. The preserve is fully open to walking off trail and is an excellent location to view wildflowers and wildlife.
