The Volland Store preserves a century-old Flint Hills market
Kratzer Brothers Mercantile opened in 1913 and served as a social hub. New owners transformed the property into an arts center and meeting venue.
The picturesque century-old building in this image served as a grocery store, marketplace and social hub for the community of Volland near Alma, Kansas. In addition to shopping, people brought blankets and had Sunday picnics on the lawn. Somehow, as the world changed all around it, the store stayed in business until the early 1970s. But once it closed, the building was subject to the elements. Finally, the roof buckled and gave way, exposing the structure to decades of erosion. New owners purchased the property in 2012 and began a total rehab. The results are stunning.
The lower level is a gallery that also doubles as an event space. The upper level is a loft that can be rented. “The Little House,” a renovated 1930s farmhouse, is also available for guests.
Outside of special events, of which there are several, The Volland Store building is only open selected hours, so be sure to check if you’re intent on seeing indoors. The outdoors is always open for exploration and relaxation and features a garden and room to roam. Although this location is unique, it’s probably best suited as part of a day trip that includes other stops. Since it’s in the heart of the Flint Hills, you’ve got plenty of options (see below).
Address The Volland Store, 24098 Volland Road, Alma, KS 66401. Note: You’ll be driving on a few gravel roads to reach the store.
