Tryst Falls has lured visitors for more than 100 years
This rural waterfall is in Clay County, Mo., between Excelsior Springs and Kearney.
If you visit Tryst Falls Park, you’re part of a tradition that dates back more than a century. Although the park has only been in existence since the 1970s, visitors have frequented it for decades. A flour mill operated here around 1850.
Tryst Falls drops about five feet – straight off of a cliff. While that may not seem like much, that makes it the “Niagara Falls” of Greater Kansas City. It’s also a natural fall, unlike spillways and engineered overflows. Tryst Falls is set in a quiet, rural park between Excelsior Springs and Kearney, Mo. Most Kansas City-area waterfalls are dependent on frequent rain and Tryst Falls is no different. If you visit in the dog days of summer, you’re unlikely to see more than a drip. But visit after a thunderstorm or during spring thaw and you’ll capture a stirring view. In addition to the falls, Tryst Falls Park features 19 acres and picnic areas.
