Overview
Taum Sauk Mountain, at 1,772 feet, is the ceiling of Missouri. While that high point elevation pales in comparison to all states west of Missouri, the peak provides a panoramic vista. On a clear day, you can see for 15 miles. And it’s quite a view. The thick forests and granite mountains of Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, in southeast Missouri, are unique. The high point itself is just a plaque in a level part of the woods. But when you set out on the trails, you’re confronted by the unusual splendor of an ancient mountain range.
The St. Francois Mountains – a group of low-lying granite peaks – are the geologic legacy of volcanic activity that occurred 1.5 billion years ago. That makes these small-but-mighty mountains older than the Appalachians. In addition to being the state’s highest peak, Taum Sauk is also home to the state’s highest waterfall. Mina Sauk Falls drops more than 130 feet down a series of rocky ledges, plunging into clear pools at its base. The falls are weather-dependent, so may be dry during some months. Rain or shine, it’s a stunning area and the location of the state’s deepest valley, dropping 700 feet into a rocky chasm.
This remote area lies in the heart of the largest contiguous block of forest and woodland in Missouri and the lower Midwest. Hikers will experience upland oak-hickory forests and rocky glades. The wild nature of the area makes it home to numerous species of plants, animals and insects.
And what about the strange spelling of Taum Sauk? It’s likely an Anglicized version of the name of a revered Native American chief.
